How to Create a Focal Point

How to Create a Focal Point

Do you want to revamp a living area and create more of an exciting focus to your room? I’ve listed a few ideas to help you create a focal point which can balance a room out and give it a new lease of life. Whether it be with a specific piece of furniture or bespoke wall design, one or two adjustments can be all you need.

The most harmonious and well-designed rooms always have at least one focal point – this is the unsung hero/unwritten rule of good interior design. Devising a focal point can create cohesion in a room, drawing everything together, ensuring there is an air of calm & balance penetrating the room.

A focal point must draw attention to the viewer but also be an integral part of the design or theme of the room. The easiest way to create a focal point is through a natural focal point like a fireplace. If your room doesn’t have a natural focal point like a fireplace, the easiest way to create one is with a piece of statement furniture.

Statement Furniture
Invest in a piece of designer furniture to really create an impact. With so many timeless pieces available, there is something to suit all manners of design schemes. The iconic Ball Chair by Eero Aarnio will suit a retro 60s scheme – think bold, bright colours, wacky patterns & a big textured rug for maximum effect. This extremely comfortable piece was originally produced in 1966 & has withstood the test of time, remaining as hugely popular now as it was then. Place this piece by the largest wall, then arrange the rest of your seating around this piece in order to appropriately highlight it.

Lighting
Statement Lighting is another great way to create a focal point. A huge floor lamp such as the celebrated Arco Lamp is a chic & modern way to create unity in a room. Also, lighting will create a congruent mood whilst harsh, overhead lighting may detract from this sense of calm which is not conducive to relaxation. Place the lamp so that it hangs over the area you want to draw attention to. In conjunction with a piece of statement furniture, this will significantly improve the visual & aesthetic quality of the room.

Integrated Entertainment System
A flat-screen TV suspended on a wall makes for an interesting focal point as the rest of the room can work around & in unison with this piece. This will ensure that your room is more inviting and balanced. Without a focal point, a room will feel chaotic and uninviting.

Create a Feature Wall
This is a cheap & easy way to ensure there is visual cohesion in your room. With a simple lick of paint, you can create a focal area using one way. Let your imagination run wild with interesting patterns, exciting wallpaper, stripes or just a plain block colour for a more minimalist feel. This method is great for bedroom designs as you can put your bed up against this wall, enhancing this feature wall.

Artwork
Artwork is a great way to pull everything together in a room. Build your room around a piece of art or a dramatic sculpture. Inject a fresh & modern feel to your design scheme. This will ensure you’re room is interesting & exciting for the viewer. Spread the love & pick the key colours & patterns from your piece & secrete them elsewhere in your room with cushions, coasters, a rug. These small & easy touches will create unity and balance in your room.

Bay Windows
If you have a bay window, then count yourself lucky. These beautiful features will ensure your room is light & airy whilst also giving the room a natural focal point. Jazz up your bay window with exciting blinds or curtains – think bright colours and bold patterns. Place your sofa in front of the window to further emphasise this feature.
